Oilers hope to avoid 5th-straight setback

By Rob Gerein | November 17, 2009

The Edmonton Oilers will be trying to avoid their longest losing streak of the season when they host the Colorado Avalanche at Rexall Place on Wednesday night.

Edmonton has dropped four straight, while Colorado, one of the hottest teams in the NHL until last week, has been having its own problems, losing three straight heading into last night’s game in Calgary.

Each team has picked up five wins in the past 10 head-to-head meetings, although three of Colorado’s wins came in shootouts.

This is the third meeting of the season between the Northwest division rivals. They last squared off on Nov. 8, when Edmonton handed Colorado its first loss of its current three-game slide, a 5-3 defeat in Denver.

In their last game, the Avs were thumped 8-2 by the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. Colorado had been a -110 home favorite and the score went well over the total of 5.5.

The Oilers lost 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road Monday night.
