The Edmonton Oilers will try to put an end to their free-fall in the NHL standings when they host Northwest division rival Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday (10:05 pm ET, SNET-Pacific, SNET-West).

The defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins were forced to use their third- and fourth-string goaltenders in that game as both their starter and back-up were injured.

And Jeff Deslauriers stopped 28 shots in Edmonton’s 6-0 loss to Colorado on Monday night, the Oilers eighth-straight defeat. Colorado won as -175 home favorites, while the score went over the 5.5-goal total set by sportsbooks.

Edmonton is 16-27-5 while Vancouver is 28-18-2.

Edmonton has dropped four straight, while Colorado, one of the hottest teams in the NHL until last week, has been having its own problems, losing three straight heading into last night’s game in Calgary.

Each team has picked up five wins in the past 10 head-to-head meetings, although three of Colorado’s wins came in shootouts.

This is the third meeting of the season between the Northwest division rivals. They last squared off on Nov. 8, when Edmonton handed Colorado its first loss of its current three-game slide, a 5-3 defeat in Denver.

In their last game, the Avs were thumped 8-2 by the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. Colorado had been a -110 home favorite and the score went well over the total of 5.5.

The Oilers lost 3-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road Monday night.
